A 39-year-old man accused of cheating multiple women through matrimonial websites by posing as an IIM Bengaluru graduate and human resources professional has been arrested by police in Uttar Pradesh.
The accused, identified as Rahul Chaturvedi, a resident of Greater Noida’s Bisrakh area, allegedly created fake profiles on matrimonial platforms and targeted women seeking marriage alliances.
Fake identity used to gain trust
According to investigators, Chaturvedi falsely claimed to be an alumnus of the prestigious Indian Institute of Management Bengaluru and portrayed himself as a successful HR professional.
Police said he used the fabricated credentials to establish trust with women before allegedly convincing them to part with money and expensive gadgets.
Authorities believe the accused carefully crafted his online persona to appear credible and financially stable, making it easier to deceive potential victims.
More than 16 women allegedly targeted
During the investigation, police found that at least 16 women had reportedly fallen victim to the fraud.
The accused is alleged to have collected nearly ₹8 lakh in cash and obtained several iPhones from the victims through various pretexts.
Officials suspect the number of victims could be higher and are examining records from matrimonial platforms and digital communications.
Social media post sparks wider attention
The case gained widespread attention after details were shared on Instagram by user @anmolgarg101, prompting discussions about online safety and verification on matrimonial websites.
Police have urged users of matrimonial and dating platforms to independently verify personal, educational and professional claims before entering into financial transactions or sharing valuable items.
Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and identify any additional victims linked to the alleged fraud.
