A First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged against unidentified persons after it was discovered that a social media profile was distributing images of female passengers on Bengaluru’s metro transit system without their approval.
This action follows widespread public anger over an Instagram page named ‘Bangalore Metro Chicks,’ which had been uploading unauthorized photographs of women riding the Namma Metro. The account had gathered more than 5,000 followers before it was exposed and faced backlash. After the uproar and subsequent FIR registration, all the photos were removed from the Instagram profile.
Authorities revealed that these photos were captured inside metro train coaches and on the station platforms. There is no evidence that the women in the images were aware they were being photographed or that they had given any consent for their pictures to be shared publicly.
The controversy came to light when a social media user on X (previously Twitter) reported the account and alerted Bengaluru City Police, demanding swift intervention. The police took cognizance of the complaint and initiated investigations independently.
This incident has raised serious concerns about privacy violations and the safety of women commuters on public transport, prompting calls for stronger monitoring and stricter enforcement of cyber and personal privacy laws.
