Karnataka’s beloved mangoes took centre stage at the ongoing Lalbagh Mango and Jackfruit Mela in Bengaluru as international visitors from Australia and Japan sampled some of the state’s finest varieties and shared their favourites.
The interaction, featured at the popular annual mela, highlighted the growing global appeal of Karnataka’s rich horticultural heritage and the unmatched popularity of the “king of fruits”.
Global visitors discover Karnataka’s mango treasures
Held at the iconic Lalbagh Botanical Garden, the Mango and Jackfruit Mela has attracted thousands of visitors, including tourists eager to explore Karnataka’s diverse range of mangoes. The event features popular varieties such as Badami, Raspuri, Mallika and Sendura, alongside several regional specialities grown across the state.
In a light-hearted tasting session, visitors from Australia and Japan sampled different mango varieties and rated them based on flavour, sweetness and texture. Their reactions have drawn attention online, with many fruit lovers celebrating Karnataka’s reputation as one of India’s leading mango-producing regions.
Mela celebrates farmers and local produce
The 27-day event, organised by the Department of Horticulture and the Karnataka State Mango Development and Marketing Corporation, brings together growers from across the state. More than 100 stalls offer fresh mangoes, jackfruits and value-added products directly from farmers.
Apart from fruit sales, the mela provides consumers an opportunity to interact directly with growers and learn about different varieties, cultivation practices and seasonal produce.
Mangoes remain a symbol of Karnataka’s summer
Despite challenges such as unseasonal rains and reduced yields this year, mangoes continue to enjoy immense popularity among consumers. Karnataka remains one of the country’s major mango-producing states, with varieties from the region finding admirers across India and abroad.
As the mela continues through June, visitors are expected to flock to Lalbagh to savour seasonal fruits and celebrate Karnataka’s rich agricultural traditions.
