Parents in Bengaluru may have to prepare for higher school transport charges this academic year as several private schools are considering a hike in bus fees following the recent increase in fuel prices.

The move comes amid rising operational expenses for school transport services, with fuel costs emerging as a major concern for educational institutions. As of Wednesday, petrol was priced at ₹110.93 per litre, while diesel stood at ₹98.80 per litre in Bengaluru.

Schools cite rising operating costs

School managements have indicated that the continuous rise in fuel prices has significantly increased transportation expenses. Apart from fuel, maintenance costs, vehicle insurance, and staff salaries have also witnessed upward revisions in recent months.

Many schools are reportedly planning to increase transport fees by around 9 per cent to offset these additional costs. The proposed revision is expected to affect thousands of students who rely on school bus services across the city.

Parents concerned over rising education expenses

The anticipated fee hike has raised concerns among parents already coping with increasing educational and household expenses. Several parent groups have urged schools to ensure that any increase remains reasonable and transparent.

Families say transportation forms a significant part of their annual education budget, particularly for students travelling long distances to schools located in different parts of Bengaluru.

Balancing safety and affordability

School authorities maintain that maintaining safe and reliable transport services requires adequate funding, especially as operating costs continue to rise. Industry observers note that fuel prices often have a direct impact on school transportation charges.

With the new academic year underway, parents and schools are expected to engage in discussions over revised transport fees while balancing affordability with service quality and student safety.
