Bengaluru: A pilot project to introduce GPS tracking in garbage collection vehicles has been launched in HSR Layout to improve transparency and strengthen waste management in Bengaluru South City Corporation (BSCC) limits.
BSCC Commissioner KN Ramesh and Bommanahalli MLA Satish Reddy launched the initiative on Friday.
36 garbage autos equipped with GPS
The project is being implemented in association with Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML), NGO Let’s Be The Change and Intel. The Bommanahalli zone has more than 200 waste collection vehicles, of which 36 autos have been equipped with the GPS tracking system as part of the pilot.
The technology will help authorities monitor the daily operations of garbage collection vehicles, including their movement, route adherence, timings and current location.
The pilot will run for eight months in the Bommanahalli zone. Based on its performance, the system is expected to be extended to other city corporations.
‘Sevak’ technology to monitor waste segregation
The project will also use ‘Sevak’ technology to monitor the weight and segregation of waste collected from individual households.
Residents who properly segregate their waste will receive a rating between zero and five stars. The system will also identify households that do not hand over their waste to collection vehicles.
This information could help marshals identify such households and impose fines where applicable.
Technology-driven waste management
The initiative is aimed at making waste collection more transparent by providing authorities with real-time information about vehicle movement and household-level waste management.
The eight-month pilot in Bommanahalli will help assess whether GPS tracking and ‘Sevak’ technology can improve route compliance, waste segregation and accountability before the system is expanded across Bengaluru. #gps #tracking #bengaluru #newskarnataka #information
