The tragic stampede during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL 2025 victory celebration has ignited a storm of accountability, placing not just the franchise, but the Indian Premier League (IPL) itself under intense scrutiny. With 11 lives lost and dozens more injured, the spotlight now shifts to the consequences that could follow.
What was meant to be a joyous celebration of RCB’s first IPL title turned catastrophic due to overcrowding, insufficient police deployment, lack of proper crowd control, and disjointed coordination among organisers and civic bodies. Eyewitnesses reported scenes of chaos, with no emergency response teams and no clear escape routes.
The incident, linked to a prominent IPL franchise, has magnified its national importance. An FIR has been filed against RCB, event organisers DNA Entertainment, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). RCB’s marketing head, Nikhil Sosale of Diageo, has been arrested, and state judicial hearings have already begun. Two KSCA officials resigned amid growing political and public pressure.
The BCCI now faces a serious dilemma. While distancing itself from the event, calling it a “franchise affair,” the board must consider how inaction could impact the league’s image. A ban on RCB for IPL 2026 is being debated online, though no official decision has been made.
If investigations reveal gross negligence, BCCI may have to act decisively to maintain the league’s integrity. For now, RCB remains under investigation, and its fate will depend on the outcome of ongoing legal proceedings.
