Bengaluru: IndiGo on Thursday issued a travel advisory warning passengers of possible flight disruptions due to dense fog and low visibility conditions affecting operations at Kempegowda International Airport, urging travellers to stay updated on flight schedules through official channels.

Fog and low visibility impact flight schedules

In an advisory shared on social media platform X, IndiGo said that persistent fog and reduced visibility over Bengaluru had affected flight schedules. The airline assured passengers that it was closely monitoring the situation and taking all necessary measures to ensure safety while minimising inconvenience.

“Low visibility and fog over Bangalore has impacted flight schedules. We’re keeping a close watch on the weather and doing our best to get you where you need to be, safely and smoothly,” the airline said in its advisory.

IndiGo also urged passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport and to rely only on official communication channels for the latest updates. “Here’s hoping clearer skies help us serve you better soon, and thank you for your patience and understanding during this challenging time,” the statement added.

Passenger advisory and operational preparedness

The airline emphasised that weather-related disruptions are beyond its control but reiterated its commitment to passenger safety. Travellers were advised to allow extra time for airport procedures, remain flexible with travel plans, and stay informed about any changes in departure or arrival timings.

Aviation experts note that dense fog during winter mornings can significantly reduce runway visibility, affecting take-offs and landings. Although Bengaluru is less prone to prolonged fog compared to northern Indian airports, sudden weather changes during December and January can still disrupt flight operations.

Airport authorities have also been coordinating with airlines to manage air traffic efficiently during periods of reduced visibility, ensuring that safety protocols are strictly followed.

Stable operations amid holiday rush

Despite weather-related challenges, IndiGo said its overall operations have remained stable ahead of the busy holiday travel season. According to information shared with news agency ANI, the airline has been carrying more than 10 lakh passengers every three days, reflecting strong demand for air travel across the country.

IndiGo stated that it has been operating between 2,100 and 2,200 flights daily, connecting passengers across 138 operational destinations in India and abroad. The airline also highlighted that it has been maintaining a steady on-time performance despite seasonal challenges such as fog and increased passenger volumes.

Industry observers point out that maintaining punctuality during peak travel periods requires careful planning, including aircraft availability, crew management and coordination with airport operators.

Expansion plans and new aircraft

In addition to operational updates, IndiGo recently announced the induction of India’s first Airbus A321XLR aircraft, marking a significant step in expanding its medium-to-long haul international operations. The aircraft is expected to offer improved fuel efficiency and extended range, allowing the airline to connect distant destinations more economically.

An IndiGo spokesperson said the airline plans to deploy the A321XLR on new international routes, including direct flights from Delhi and Mumbai to Athens, starting January 23, 2026, as previously announced. The new aircraft is expected to enhance passenger comfort while supporting the airline’s long-term growth strategy.

Aviation analysts say the induction of the A321XLR positions IndiGo to strengthen its presence in medium-haul international markets, especially connecting Indian metros with destinations in Europe and West Asia.

Weather disruptions across the country

Fog-related disruptions have not been limited to Bengaluru alone. In recent days, airlines have faced operational challenges across several parts of northern India due to dense fog and poor visibility conditions.

SpiceJet also issued a travel advisory on Thursday, cautioning passengers about potential flight disruptions at airports in Delhi, Amritsar, Jammu, Ayodhya, Gorakhpur, Varanasi and Darbhanga. The airline advised travellers to check flight status regularly and plan their journeys accordingly.

Aviation authorities have noted that fog is a recurring seasonal phenomenon during winter, particularly in northern India, and airlines typically activate low-visibility procedures to maintain safety while minimising delays.

Importance of passenger awareness

Experts stress that passenger awareness plays a crucial role during weather-related disruptions. Checking flight status in advance, arriving early at airports and staying in touch with airline notifications can help reduce stress and inconvenience.

Airlines, on their part, are increasingly using digital platforms such as mobile apps, SMS alerts and social media to provide real-time updates to passengers. IndiGo’s advisory reflects this approach, encouraging travellers to rely on verified sources of information.

Conclusion: With dense fog impacting flight operations in Bengaluru, IndiGo has urged passengers to remain alert and informed while assuring them of continued support and safety-first operations. As winter weather continues to affect aviation across parts of the country, coordination between airlines, airports and passengers remains key to ensuring smoother travel during the busy holiday season.
