In a significant boost to India’s aviation sector, IndiGo has inked an agreement with Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) to establish a state-of-the-art Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility in the city.
Spanning 31 acres, the facility comes with a massive investment of ₹1,100 crore, covering infrastructure, machinery, and plant setup. This marks a key milestone in elevating Bengaluru’s role on the global aviation map and fortifying India’s civil aviation infrastructure.
The advanced facility will house four hangars with the capacity to service either four wide-body or eight narrow-body aircraft simultaneously. A dedicated paint hangar is also planned, capable of accommodating one wide-body or two narrow-body planes. The centre will support IndiGo’s growing fleet, including the A320, A321XLR, and the future addition of A350 wide-body aircraft. It will also be equipped to handle aircraft of codeshare partners.
Karnataka Industries Minister MB Patil welcomed the move, stating it reinforces Bengaluru’s potential to become Asia’s leading MRO destination. He emphasized the state’s commitment to developing aerospace and aviation manufacturing.
The project is expected to directly create over 750 jobs across domains like engineering, warehousing, logistics, and ground support. Additionally, it will enhance Kempegowda International Airport’s handling capacity — projected to scale from 1,300 aircraft by FY2031 to around 2,100 by FY2038.
This initiative is likely to attract top global OEMs and tier-1 suppliers, stimulating a robust ecosystem for ancillary industries and skill development in the region.
