Bengaluru: A Kannada television actor and member of a district child welfare body has been arrested for allegedly blackmailing multiple women using private photos and videos, police said on Friday.
The accused, identified as Haniyuru Chandregowda, was taken into custody by the Rajarajeshwari Nagar police following a complaint filed by a 43-year-old makeup artist.
Complaint alleges exploitation and extortion
According to police, the complainant stated that she first came into contact with the accused in 2021 after he allegedly promised to help her secure work in the film industry.
Over time, he reportedly developed a personal relationship with her and frequently visited her residence. Police said he later began blackmailing her by threatening to release private photos and videos, allegedly extorting around ₹5 lakh.
Multiple victims suspected
During the investigation, officials recovered over 20 photos and videos involving different women from the accused’s mobile phone.
Police suspect that more women may have been targeted using a similar modus operandi.
Alleged modus operandi
Investigators said Chandregowda allegedly used social media platforms to befriend women, particularly those who were single. He would initiate conversations, gain their trust, and later make video calls.
He is accused of luring victims with false promises, including offering film opportunities, and then engaging in intimate relationships. Police said he would record private moments and later use them to extort money and valuables.
In some cases, the accused allegedly introduced himself under false identities, including posing as a senior police officer.
Police urge victims to come forward
The accused has been produced before a court, and police are seeking custody for further interrogation. His mobile phone has been seized and will undergo forensic examination.
Authorities have appealed to other potential victims to come forward and file complaints, assuring that their identities will be kept confidential.
Investigation underway
Police said a detailed investigation is ongoing to identify all victims and establish the full extent of the alleged crimes.
Conclusion
The case has raised serious concerns about online exploitation and abuse of trust. With evidence suggesting multiple victims, police are continuing their probe while urging affected individuals to report incidents without fear.
