Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has directed the Transport Department to take stringent action against repeat offenders of drunk driving and speeding, stressing that such drivers should face severe penalties, including the permanent cancellation of their driving licenses. This directive comes as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance road safety across the state.
Speaking at the inauguration of 65 advanced ambulances at Vidhana Soudha, Siddaramaiah underscored the need for public cooperation in adhering to road safety rules. He stated, “The government is giving top priority to road safety and has launched several programs aimed at reducing accidents and fatalities. However, the public must also cooperate by strictly following road safety rules.”
Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, who was present at the event, echoed the Chief Minister’s concerns, urging immediate action against those who repeatedly violate safety norms, particularly in cases of driving under the influence of alcohol.
New Ambulances for Faster Emergency Response
In addition to the focus on punitive measures for traffic violations, the Chief Minister introduced 65 ambulances equipped with advanced life-saving technology under the ‘Chief Minister’s Emergency Service’ initiative. These ambulances are designed to provide critical medical assistance during the golden hour following accidents, significantly improving emergency response times.
“These state-of-the-art ambulances will be deployed in accident-prone areas, commonly known as black spots, with 65 such locations identified,” Siddaramaiah announced. He further noted that out of the 65 ambulances, 26 are equipped with ventilators and advanced life support systems, ensuring quick transport to the nearest taluk and district hospitals.
The initiative, organised in collaboration with the Health and Family Welfare Department and the State Road Safety Authority, is part of the government’s broader campaign to reduce road accidents and fatalities by implementing both preventive and responsive measures.
Curbing Road Fatalities and Accidents
Karnataka has witnessed a high number of road accidents, many of which result from reckless driving, speeding, and drunk driving. In light of this, the government’s approach not only includes strict enforcement of traffic rules but also focuses on improving post-accident care. By deploying advanced ambulances at black spots, the state aims to increase survival rates and ensure timely medical assistance.
The Chief Minister’s message is clear: road safety is a shared responsibility, and while the government is committed to improving infrastructure and emergency response, drivers must also take accountability for their actions on the road.
