Bengaluru: The results of the Second PUC examinations for the 2025–26 academic year have been officially announced, recording a historic improvement of nearly 13 per cent compared to the previous year. The strong performance has been hailed as a major milestone in Karnataka’s education sector.
Udupi district emerged as the top performer across the state, continuing its consistent record of academic excellence and reinforcing its reputation as a leading education hub.
Strong performance across streams
According to Madhu Bangarappa, the results this year have set new benchmarks, with all three major streams showing encouraging pass percentages.
- Arts: 71%
- Commerce: 88%
- Science: 92%
The Science and Commerce streams, in particular, recorded outstanding results, contributing significantly to the overall improvement in pass percentage across Karnataka.
Education experts have noted that improved teaching methods, better academic support, and increased student focus may have contributed to the notable rise in performance.
Girls outperform boys again
Female students once again outshone their male counterparts, continuing a consistent trend seen in recent years. Out of 3,53,742 girls who appeared for the examination, 3,13,770 passed, resulting in an impressive pass percentage of 88.70 per cent.
The performance highlights the growing academic achievement among girls in the state and reflects increasing access to education and support systems.
Major error raises concerns
Despite the overall success, the results announcement has been overshadowed by a significant error that has sparked confusion and criticism.
In a shocking case, a student was awarded 111 marks in a subject where the maximum possible score is 100. The anomaly has raised serious concerns about the accuracy of the evaluation and result processing system.
How the discrepancy occurred
The student, who had appeared as a repeater to improve previous scores, was awarded 94 marks in the Hindi theory examination. Additionally, the college granted 17 marks for internal assessment.
However, instead of capping the total at 100, the marks were incorrectly added to show a total of 111. The student was also marked as ‘pass’, further highlighting the lapse in result compilation.
The incident has left the student and family shocked, with questions being raised about whether the error occurred during evaluation, data entry, or final calculation.
Demand for accountability
The issue has triggered widespread concern among students and parents across the state. Many have questioned how such a glaring error could occur in an official examination system that impacts students’ academic futures.
Parents and stakeholders have demanded accountability and a thorough review of the evaluation process to ensure such mistakes are not repeated. There are also calls for authorities to identify those responsible and implement stricter verification mechanisms.
Questions over system reliability
The controversy has cast a shadow over an otherwise successful results announcement. Critics argue that errors of this magnitude undermine trust in the examination system and highlight the need for stronger quality checks.
Education authorities are now under pressure to address the issue promptly and reassure students about the credibility of the system.
Conclusion
While the 2025–26 Second PUC results mark a significant academic achievement for Karnataka, the emergence of a major calculation error has raised important questions about system reliability. Ensuring accuracy and accountability will be crucial in maintaining public trust in the examination process going forward.
