BENGALURU: The Karnataka government on Wednesday issued a revised order detailing how compensation will be given for injuries and deaths caused by stray dog bites across the Greater Bengaluru Region. The update modifies earlier guidelines issued in 2023 and aims to streamline payouts while ensuring immediate medical support for victims.

New compensation structure for injuries

Under the revised rules, individuals who suffer skin punctures, deep bruising with punctures, lacerations or multiple bite injuries resulting from a stray dog attack will receive ₹5,000 as compensation.

However, the key change lies in how this amount is distributed. Of the total ₹5,000:

  • ₹3,500 will be paid directly to the victim by the Urban Development Department (UDD)
  • ₹1,500 will be transferred to the Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust (SAST) under the Karnataka Health Department to cover treatment expenses

This structure ensures that victims can seek immediate medical treatment at any private hospital, since the government will directly cover the initial medical costs. Officials said the measure is aimed at preventing hospitals from denying treatment due to lack of upfront payment.

Compensation for fatalities

In the event of a death caused by a stray dog attack or rabies resulting from a stray dog bite, the victim’s family will receive ₹5,00,000 as compensation.

Verification committees to be set up

All municipal corporations under the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) will now be required to form a Verification and Compensation Disbursement Committee. These committees will be responsible for:

  • Verifying each case
  • Approving compensation eligibility
  • Ensuring timely disbursal of funds

Officials noted that the revised structure will create a more transparent and efficient process, reducing delays that previously affected victims and their families.
