The body of a 14-year-old girl from Kerala, who had gone missing during a family trip, was recovered from a deep gorge near Manikyadhara Falls in Karnataka’s Chikkamagaluru district, bringing a tragic end to a nearly four-day search.

Massive search operation ends in tragedy

The teenager, identified as Sreenanda from Palakkad, had reportedly gone missing on Tuesday evening while visiting Inam Dattatreya Peetha and the nearby waterfall with her family. She was last seen around 5.20 pm before disappearing within minutes, prompting immediate concern.

Authorities launched an extensive search operation involving 22 teams, including personnel from the State Disaster Response Force, Fire and Emergency Services, local police, and the Anti-Naxal Force. Advanced tools such as drones and thermal imaging cameras were used to scan the dense forest and steep terrain.

Police suspect accidental fall

Police officials suspect that the teenager may have accidentally slipped and fallen into the gorge, which is believed to be nearly 2,000 feet deep. However, they have not ruled out other possibilities and said investigations are ongoing.

Following a complaint from her parents, a case had initially been registered under Section 137(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, considering the possibility of abduction. Multiple angles were explored during the search.

Bright student remembered

Family members described Sreenanda as a bright and promising student who had recently completed her Class 10 Board examinations. The trip was meant to be a relaxing break after her exams, making the incident all the more heartbreaking.

Safety concerns at tourist spots

The tragedy has once again raised concerns about safety measures at popular tourist destinations, especially those with steep cliffs and unpredictable terrain.
