A Bengaluru commuter has stirred debate after revealing he was charged ₹30 for carrying a suitcase on Namma Metro. Sharing his experience on X, user Avinash Chanchal said, “I am absolutely stunned that I had to pay ₹30 in the Bangalore metro for this bag. The Bangalore metro is already the most expensive in the country, and this just adds to the burden. This is just another example of how BMRCL is excluding people from accessing the metro.”

His post quickly gained traction, with many questioning whether charging separately for oversized luggage is fair. Some users agreed with his frustration, arguing that the additional fee adds to the cost of an already expensive public transport system. Others, however, defended the policy, pointing out that bulky bags occupy more space and inconvenience fellow passengers.

One commuter noted, “If the bag is bigger than what can fit in the scanner, you pay. I’ve carried a suitcase and backpack many times without being charged because they fit within the limits.” Another said the policy would make sense only if the metro provided proper storage facilities: “Paying extra just to hold the bag makes no sense.”

A few reminded passengers that restrictions extend beyond luggage, as items like alcohol and tools are not permitted on board at all. Linking the issue to Bengaluru’s mobility challenges, one commuter remarked, “Traffic is so bad that even if they charge three times more, people will still take the metro. Authorities should fix infrastructure instead of squeezing commuters.”
