Bengaluru’s metro network was thrown into disarray on Monday morning after Namma Metro trains started operating with a gap of 10 minutes between services during rush hour. The unexpected change triggered massive crowding and confusion at several major stations, including Majestic and Magadi Road.
Numerous videos capturing the chaos at crowded platforms circulated across social media, showing frustrated commuters struggling to get into jam-packed coaches. Daily passengers, especially office-goers, voiced strong disappointment at the lack of preparedness.
Central MP P.C. Mohan criticised the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), stating the agency failed in basic planning. He accused officials of assuming that the working population had the day off, leading to a poorly thought-out frequency reduction. “Absolute chaos due to BMRCL’s poor judgment,” he posted on X.
Online users were quick to vent their anger, citing long waits and overcrowded trains. One commuter complained, “Stuck at Majestic for over half an hour! Unbelievable after such a steep fare increase.” Others feared that the lack of orderly queues and proper crowd control could soon result in dangerous stampede-like conditions.
Following public outrage, BMRCL released a statement explaining that four extra trains had been added between Baiyappanahalli and Majestic to ease congestion. Additional trips were also introduced from Majestic, Garudacharpalya, and Whitefield. In the evening, services from ITPL will run every 5 minutes to handle the heavy traffic.
Commuters continue to call for better planning and real-time updates to avoid such future inconveniences.
