Flight operations at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) faced major disruptions on Saturday as escalating tensions in the Middle East triggered widespread airspace closures.
The crisis followed coordinated military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian targets, prompting countries including Iran, Iraq and the UAE to close their airspace to civilian aircraft. The ripple effect has significantly impacted global aviation routes, including those connecting Bengaluru to key Gulf destinations.
Airlines suspend and reroute flights
Indian carriers such as Air India and IndiGo suspended services to several Middle Eastern destinations. Multiple international departures from Bengaluru were delayed, cancelled or diverted due to the closure of key air corridors.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued an urgent advisory directing Indian airlines to avoid affected airspace as a precautionary safety measure.
Passenger advisory and support
Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL), which operates KIA, has urged passengers to verify flight status with airlines before arriving at the airport. A dedicated help desk has been set up at Terminal 2’s kerbside area to assist travellers with real-time updates and rebooking guidance.
Airport authorities stated that they are coordinating closely with airlines and aviation regulators to minimise inconvenience. However, with the geopolitical situation evolving rapidly, further disruptions cannot be ruled out.
Global tensions hit local connectivity
The developments underline how geopolitical flashpoints thousands of kilometres away can directly affect Karnataka’s international connectivity. Bengaluru, home to a large expatriate population with strong links to the Gulf region, is particularly vulnerable to aviation disruptions in West Asia.
As airlines continue to reassess routes and safety protocols, passengers are advised to remain alert, flexible and prepared for schedule changes.
