Nearly a month after a large tree fell on their residence in Nandidurg Extension, an elderly couple is still waiting for authorities to completely clear the debris, highlighting concerns over delayed civic response in the city.
The tree crashed onto the Menacherys’ home on 7th Cross Road last month, trapping the senior citizens inside their house for an entire day. With the front gate and entrance blocked, the couple had to spend ₹10,000 from their own pocket to create a temporary passage and regain access to the outside world.
Debris continues to block road
Following repeated requests from residents, the Bengaluru Central City Corporation (BCCC) eventually deployed a crane to remove the fallen tree. While officials from the forest cell cut and removed the main trunk, several smaller logs and branches were left behind.
Residents say the remaining debris continues to occupy portions of the road and footpath, creating inconvenience for pedestrians and motorists alike.
The issue has become particularly concerning as the monsoon season intensifies, raising fears about public safety and accessibility in the neighbourhood.
Repeated appeals yield little result
According to Menachery, she has been regularly contacting forest cell officials in an effort to get the remaining debris removed.
She said officials have repeatedly assured her that the cleanup would be completed the following day, but the promises have yet to translate into action.
The prolonged delay has left the couple frustrated as they continue living in a house that was damaged during the incident.
Residents seek quicker response
The incident has once again brought attention to the challenges faced by Bengaluru residents in obtaining timely civic assistance after weather-related emergencies.
With heavy rains and strong winds causing multiple tree falls across the city in recent weeks, residents have called for faster debris removal and better coordination between civic agencies.
When contacted, forest cell officials reportedly assured that the remaining logs and branches would be cleared on Monday.
