The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), the operator of India’s first semi-high-speed Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), has proposed bringing the
corridors to Karnataka, aiming to boost regional connectivity and economic development.
The proposal outlines four new high-speed rail corridors, all radiating from Bengaluru, designed to enhance mobility between major satellite towns and neighboring states:
- Bengaluru–Hoskote–Kolar (65 km)
- Bengaluru–Mysuru (145 km)
- Bengaluru–Tumakuru (60 km)
- Bengaluru–Hosur–Krishnagiri–Dharmapuri (138 km) (extends into Tamil Nadu)
According to Moneycontrol, NCRTC has submitted a formal proposal to the Karnataka government, offering to prepare Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) and assist with initial planning. Officials have also been invited to visit the operational Delhi–Meerut RRTS stretch for a firsthand experience.
The Namo Bharat trains are capable of speeds up to 160 kmph, reducing travel time significantly—covering 90 km in under an hour. The system promises year-round operations, advanced signalling, and dedicated viaduct/tunnel alignments, incorporating international best practices.
The recommended funding model mirrors the Delhi-Meerut project:
- 60% from multilateral funding agencies
- 20% from the Government of India
- 20% from the state government
NCRTC believes Karnataka, given its strong GDP and growing urban sprawl, is well positioned to benefit from such high-speed transit systems.
