Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, the Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Council, has firmly denied allegations that he misused his influence to obtain a plot from the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) in Mysuru. Speaking on Thursday, Narayanaswamy responded to accusations made by Industries Minister M B Patil, clarifying that his plot allocation followed all legal procedures and was not at the expense of others.
Allegations and Response
Minister M B Patil had recently charged Narayanaswamy with using his political influence to secure a KIADB plot, a claim that Narayanaswamy has categorically rejected. He asserted that the plot was allotted to him in 2006 during the BJP government’s tenure, despite his role as the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee’s general secretary at the time. “I didn’t influence anyone to get it,” Narayanaswamy emphasised.
Legal Battle for Retention
Narayanaswamy recounted the challenges he faced in retaining the plot, particularly after the Congress came to power in 2013. According to him, no party leaders came to his aid when the KIADB attempted to repossess the plot due to alleged non-compliance with norms. “I had to seek the court’s intervention to retain the plot,” he explained, highlighting that his struggle was a personal battle rather than one aided by political connections.
Humble Background and Limited Resources
Narayanaswamy, who comes from a humble background, underscored that he is not wealthy like many other politicians in the state. He pointed out that even constructing a warehouse on the allocated plot was a significant challenge for him. “I have neither snatched away someone’s opportunity nor influenced anyone,” Narayanaswamy stated, defending his integrity and the legitimacy of his plot ownership.
Challenge to the Government
In a bold move, Narayanaswamy dared the state government to take action if it is proven that the allocation of his plot did not adhere to the required norms. “If the norms were not followed, I challenge the government to take away my plot,” he declared, maintaining his stance that the plot was obtained fairly and without any undue influence.
Conclusion
The controversy surrounding the KIADB plot has brought Narayanaswamy into the spotlight, with his defence centred on legal compliance and personal integrity. As the state government considers its next steps, Narayanaswamy’s challenge remains open, underscoring the political tensions surrounding land allocations in Karnataka.
