The Forest Department is set to transform 153 acres of reclaimed land near the Yelahanka RTO into a new green space named after renowned environmentalist Salumarada Thimmakka.
Announcement Highlights:
The initiative was announced by Eshwar Khandre, Minister for Forest, Ecology, and Environment, during the Wildlife Week closing ceremony at Aranya Bhavan.
The land, originally leased to the Karnataka Forest Development Corporation (KFDC), will be developed into a park inspired by Cubbon Park, supported by corporate social responsibility funding.
Community Impact:
Minister Khandre emphasized the rapid development in the Yelahanka area, noting that the proposed Salumarada Thimmakka Garden will serve as a crucial lung space for the community.
He pointed out that Bengaluru’s green cover has decreased by 5 sq km over the past decade, currently comprising 89 sq km, or about 6.81% of the city’s area, as reported by the Forest Survey of India.
Khandre highlighted the importance of restoring Bengaluru’s reputation as the ‘Garden City’ and emphasized the need for increased afforestation efforts in the coming years.
