Bengaluru Police Commissioner B. Dayananda, during a press briefing on Tuesday, addressed the growing concerns about the practices of microfinancing firms in the city. He confirmed that, as of now, no cases of harassment by microfinance institutions (MFIs) had been reported in Bengaluru.
Dayananda further mentioned that in response to incidents of harassment by microfinance firms that have occurred in other parts of Karnataka, two rounds of meetings had already taken place at the government level. These meetings were held to discuss and implement stricter guidelines for microfinance operations in the state. The guidelines aim to ensure that the practices of MFIs remain ethical, and they include specific protocols to prevent any potential harassment of borrowers.
Additionally, the Commissioner emphasized that all officers in Bengaluru have been sensitized and are on alert to act swiftly and take appropriate action should any harassment incidents be reported in the city. The police have been directed to remain vigilant and responsive, with clear instructions for the public to report any such incidents to their local police stations or through the 112 emergency helpline.
By making this statement, Dayananda assured the public that the police are proactively working to ensure the safety and well-being of citizens in regard to microfinance activities. The intention is not only to monitor the situation but also to create awareness and offer a direct channel for people to report any harassment they might experience. The steps being taken are a proactive measure to prevent any potential issues in Bengaluru, where such incidents have yet to surface.
