A 36-year-old repeat offender was arrested by Shivajinagar police for openly wielding a deadly weapon, known as a ‘long,’ while riding pillion on a scooter near Bamboo Bazaar. The accused, Jalaa Siddiqui, was caught after a motorist recorded and shared a video of the act.
During interrogation, police uncovered Siddiqui’s extensive criminal history—37 cases involving robbery, vehicle theft, and burglary. Notoriously elusive, he has a history of attempting self-harm during arrests, once swallowing a lighter and on another occasion ingesting four five-rupee coins.
Siddiqui, who frequently changes residences to evade capture, had been staying near a hospital on Queens Road, where his wife recently gave birth. On Thursday, he once again attempted to injure himself with a blade but was swiftly subdued by police.
