A shocking family tragedy has come to light in Koppal district, where an 18-year-old PU student allegedly stabbed his father, mother and elder sister after being advised to stop playing online mobile games.

The incident occurred on the night of June 6 at Hosa Ayodhya village in Gangavathi taluk. Police identified the deceased as Venkat Naidu (45), a cook at a private school, and his daughter Pragathi (19). Naidu’s wife, Soujanya, sustained grievous injuries and is undergoing treatment.

Family attacked while asleep

According to police, the family had dinner together before retiring for the night. Venkat Naidu, Soujanya and their two children were sleeping in one room, while Naidu’s parents slept in another.

At around 10.30 pm, Naidu’s father, Tatarao, reportedly heard a commotion and his son’s cries for help. Unable to open the room, he sought assistance from neighbours.

When the door was opened, Venkat Naidu, Soujanya and Pragathi were found with severe stab injuries. Pragathi died on the spot, while Venkat Naidu later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.

Student suspected of attack

In his complaint, Tatarao alleged that his grandson, Sai Venkat Manideep, suddenly became enraged, picked up a knife and attacked the family members before allegedly attempting to harm himself.

Police said the accused is currently undergoing treatment at VIMS Hospital in Ballari along with his injured mother.

Superintendent of Police Dr Ram L Arasiddi said preliminary investigations suggest that the attack was carried out by a family member. Investigators were told that the accused allegedly switched off the lights before attacking the sleeping family members.

Investigation underway

Police have registered a case and are continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the incident.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the local community, raising concerns about family conflicts and the impact of excessive online gaming among young people.
