A controversial performance at the Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations in Chamarajpet, Bengaluru, has drawn widespread criticism for allegedly disrespecting the Panjurli idol, a deity deeply revered in Tulu Nadu. The incident involved a performer, impersonating Panjurli, bringing Minister Zameer Ahmed on stage while dancing to a song from the film Kantara.
Coastal communities have condemned the act, labeling it an insult to Tulu Nadu’s cultural and devotional traditions. Tulu organizations have long opposed the portrayal of deities in movies and public performances, citing concerns about mockery and disrespect.
The incident has reignited demands for a Tulu Tribal Cultural Board (TTCB) to preserve and protect the region’s heritage. It has also led to renewed criticism of films like Kantara, which feature depictions of Panjurli, with locals urging stricter regulations to prevent the satirical representation of sacred practices.
Calls are growing for stricter enforcement of a 2012 circular that prohibits showing deity worship as entertainment. Leaders from Tulu Nadu have demanded the removal of objectionable scenes in films and cultural events to safeguard their traditions.
