In a major stride toward smarter policing, Bengaluru Police have geotagged over 5.35 lakh CCTV cameras across public areas in the city, enhancing surveillance and investigative efficiency, Police Commissioner B Dayananda confirmed on Tuesday.

As of April 30, 2025, 5,35,815 cameras have been integrated with the Mobile Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (MCCTNS). This initiative is expected to dramatically reduce blind spots and support swift response during criminal investigations.

Between January 1, 2024, and April 30, 2025, police added 3.03 lakh new cameras to the network. Prior to that, 2.32 lakh devices were already registered. The drive follows a plan first reported on March 24 to eliminate gaps in surveillance by mapping all public CCTV units.

Among the geotagged equipment are 7,500 AI-powered cameras installed under the ₹667-crore Bengaluru Safe City Project, aimed at improving urban safety infrastructure. The rest include installations under the Karnataka Public Safety (Measures) Enforcement Act, 2017.

Police officials said the geotagging allows investigators to quickly identify nearby cameras at any crime scene using a dedicated app linked to MCCTNS. This streamlined access helps retrieve visual evidence efficiently, improving both crime detection and response times.

The move represents a significant leap in adopting technology for public security, reinforcing Bengaluru’s push to become a safer, smarter city.
