Bengaluru: Fresh political speculation has emerged within the Karnataka Congress after reports suggested that Home Minister G. Parameshwara expressed disappointment to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over missing out on the chief minister’s post and sought a change in his ministerial portfolio.

According to sources, Parameshwara recently met Kharge and conveyed his dissatisfaction over being overlooked for Karnataka’s top political position for a second time. The veteran Congress leader is also said to have requested a different portfolio, indicating unease with his current responsibilities in the Home Department.

While neither Parameshwara nor the Congress leadership has officially commented on the reports, the development has reignited discussions about leadership dynamics within the ruling party.

Parameshwara’s chief ministerial ambitions

Parameshwara has long been regarded as one of the senior-most leaders in the Karnataka Congress and a prominent Dalit face within the party.

Over the years, he has repeatedly been viewed as a contender for the chief minister’s post. Following the Congress victory in the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections, his name featured prominently during discussions over the state’s leadership.

Although the position eventually went to Siddaramaiah, Parameshwara publicly maintained that he had never been out of contention for the role.

Leaders from the Scheduled Caste community have also periodically argued that the Congress should consider appointing a Dalit chief minister if an opportunity for leadership change arises.

The latest reports suggest that the issue remains politically relevant within sections of the party.

Leadership transition revives debate

The reported dissatisfaction comes shortly after a major leadership change in Karnataka.

Congress leader D. K. Shivakumar recently succeeded Siddaramaiah as Chief Minister under the party’s reported 2.5-year rotational leadership arrangement.

The transition followed months of speculation, internal discussions and consultations involving the Congress high command.

According to party sources, the final decision emerged after a series of meetings in New Delhi involving Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar.

The leadership change was viewed as an attempt to maintain party unity and prepare for the 2028 Karnataka Assembly elections.

Siddaramaiah’s exit and Shivakumar’s rise

Siddaramaiah resigned as Chief Minister on May 28 after reportedly being directed by the party leadership to step down.

The veteran leader later stated that he accepted the decision in the interest of the organisation and to ensure a smooth transition.

His resignation cleared the path for Shivakumar, who had long been considered a strong claimant to the chief minister’s position following the Congress victory in the state.

The move ended a prolonged power-sharing debate that had dominated Karnataka politics since the formation of the Congress government.

However, reports of Parameshwara’s unhappiness indicate that leadership issues within the party may not have been fully resolved.

Demand for portfolio change

Apart from expressing disappointment over the chief ministerial position, Parameshwara is reportedly seeking a change from the Home portfolio.

The reasons behind the request remain unclear, and no official explanation has been provided.

As Home Minister, Parameshwara has handled several major law-and-order challenges and played a key role in the state’s administration.

Political observers believe any portfolio reshuffle involving such a senior leader could carry wider implications for internal party equations and caste representation within the government.

Congress yet to respond officially

The Congress high command has not issued any statement regarding the reports, and there has been no public confirmation of the alleged meeting or requests made by Parameshwara.

Party leaders have also refrained from commenting on speculation surrounding future leadership changes or ministerial reshuffles.

Until an official response is provided, the reports remain based on political sources familiar with the developments.

Conclusion

The reports surrounding G. Parameshwara’s alleged dissatisfaction have once again highlighted the delicate balance of power within the Karnataka Congress. Although the party recently completed a major leadership transition with D.K. Shivakumar taking over as Chief Minister, fresh speculation suggests internal aspirations and political equations continue to shape discussions within the ruling party. Whether these reports lead to any organisational or cabinet changes remains to be seen.
