Frustrated by some private schools beginning classes before the official end of summer holidays, Bengaluru parents are pressing the Department of School Education and Literacy to intervene. They are demanding a temporary halt to classes, particularly considering the relentless downpours across the city.

Although the official vacation extends until May 28, several institutions—especially in South Bengaluru—have resumed lessons, including for primary grades. “Higher classes like 10 and 12 are understandable, but why drag tiny tots back into classrooms?” asked a concerned parent. Another added, “While it might be convenient for working parents, early reopening after just a month off is unacceptable. Now with heavy rain, schools still refuse to suspend classes.”

One parent shared their defiance: “I kept my child home after Monday night’s storm, yet he was marked absent. Safety trumps attendance. He won’t be attending for a week at least.”

As per the academic schedule, schools are to reopen on May 29. BN Yogananda, from the Karnataka School-College Parent Associations Coordination Committee, accused schools of restarting early to lure admissions—a move he claims undermines children’s rights. “After the recent tragic electrocution of a Class 9 student, how can we ignore safety?” he questioned.

The Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner clarified the state cannot announce holidays for schools functioning unofficially during the break.

Meanwhile, some law colleges postponed assessments after students reached campuses in extreme conditions. Universities are monitoring the situation, with Bengaluru City University set to decide on MBA exam rescheduling, and Bangalore University yet to comment.
