Bengaluru: Bengaluru Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the theft of gold ornaments worth nearly ₹1 crore belonging to a US-based doctor during a family wedding in the city, marking a breakthrough in the high-profile case reported earlier this year.
The theft had taken place at a wedding hall under the Avalahalli Police Station limits, where the doctor had kept her jewellery in a locked room while attending the wedding reception.
Jewellery disappeared from locked room
According to the police, the complainant, Dr Siruvella Sridevi (52), had travelled from the United States to Bengaluru to attend her nephew’s wedding. She had brought around 725 grams of gold ornaments, valued at approximately ₹1 crore, for the family function.
On the evening of the reception, the jewellery was reportedly kept inside a room at the wedding venue. After wearing a few ornaments, she left the remaining valuables in the room and locked it before returning to the function. When she came back later, the jewellery had vanished despite there being no signs of forced entry.
Police crack the case
Following months of investigation, Bengaluru Police traced the suspect and arrested the accused in connection with the theft. Officials are continuing the investigation to determine whether others were involved and to recover the remaining stolen ornaments.
Police are also examining how the accused gained access to the locked room and whether an insider played any role in the theft.
Investigation continues
The case had attracted considerable attention due to the high value of the stolen jewellery and the circumstances under which it disappeared from a locked room during a family celebration.
Police said further investigation is underway to recover the remaining valuables and establish the complete sequence of events.
