Tumakuru: In an unusual incident that left a jewellery store owner stunned, a rat allegedly stole diamond-studded jewellery worth nearly ₹10 lakh from a showroom in Karnataka’s Tumakuru. The missing ornaments were eventually recovered after CCTV footage revealed the unexpected culprit.
The bizarre incident took place at Vishwas Jewellery near Caltex Circle in Tumakuru city.
Jewellery disappears without any break-in
Employees were shocked when they opened the showroom the following morning and found that more than 50 grams of gold and diamond jewellery had gone missing.
What made the incident even more puzzling was the absence of any signs of theft. The shop’s shutter remained intact, there were no signs of forced entry, and nothing inside the premises appeared to have been disturbed.
Several gold chains and diamond rings had mysteriously vanished overnight, leaving the staff searching for answers.
CCTV reveals an unlikely thief
Before approaching the police, the showroom staff decided to examine the CCTV footage captured inside the store.
To their surprise, the cameras allegedly showed a rat dragging the jewellery pieces across the floor one by one before disappearing into its burrow.
The footage captured the rodent carrying away the ornaments, solving the mystery behind the missing valuables.
Jewellery recovered from rat’s burrow
Following the rat’s movements shown in the CCTV footage, employees traced the location of its burrow and carefully dug it open.
Their search led to the recovery of the missing ornaments, including 10 diamond rings and three gold chains, bringing relief to the store owner and staff.
The unusual incident has since gone viral on social media, with many amused by what has been dubbed one of the most unusual “thefts” ever caught on CCTV.
