The year began on a challenging note for Poovanna Chandura Boby. The Karnataka hockey player sustained a facial injury while playing for Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers against Soorma Hockey Club during the Hockey India League in January. Following surgery, the 22-year-old was sidelined for two months, impacting his chances for selection in both the Indian national team and the FIH Pro League.
However, there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Poovanna has earned his first call-up to the 24-member Indian squad for the Australia tour, beginning August 15 in Perth. The four-match series offers a crucial platform for the midfielder-turned-defender to impress selectors ahead of the Asia Cup, which kicks off August 29 in Rajgir, Bihar.
“It’s a huge opportunity for me,” Poovanna told TOI at the Sports Authority of India in Bengaluru. “Everything now depends on how I perform on the pitch. I want to secure my place in the final 18.”
While he acknowledges the intense competition in the squad, Poovanna remains optimistic. “I’m only 22. Even if I miss out on the Asia Cup, I believe I’ll be back for major events soon,” he said.
A product of Kodagu’s hockey-rich culture, Poovanna has already represented India at the Junior Asia Cup 2023 (gold) and the Junior World Cup in Malaysia. “Consistency is key,” he adds, aiming to keep his career graph on an upward curve.
