Bengaluru: Districts across Coastal, South Interior and North Interior Karnataka are expected to receive pre-monsoon showers beginning May 16, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The forecast indicates light to moderate rainfall in several districts, while some regions may also witness heavy rain and thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds.

Weather officials stated that rainfall activity is expected to continue in different parts of the state until May 21, bringing relief from heat in some regions while also prompting caution regarding strong winds and thunderstorms.

The forecast covers coastal districts, interior Karnataka and parts of Bengaluru and surrounding regions.

Coastal districts likely to receive rainfall

According to the IMD forecast, coastal districts are expected to receive rainfall over the coming days.

Light to moderate rainfall is likely at one or two places in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts until May 21.

Authorities stated that weather conditions in coastal areas may remain unstable during this period.

Residents in vulnerable locations have been advised to remain alert, particularly during periods of intense rainfall and strong winds.

North Interior Karnataka may witness thundershowers

In North Interior Karnataka, several districts are expected to receive rainfall accompanied by gusty winds.

On May 16, light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers with wind speeds of 40 to 50 kmph are likely at isolated places in Raichur, Yadgir, Vijayapura, Kalaburagi, Gadag, Koppal and Bagalkot districts.

The IMD stated that Dharwad and Gadag districts, along with these regions, are expected to receive similar weather conditions on May 17.

Officials added that dry weather conditions are likely to prevail in other districts not covered under the forecast.

Heavy rainfall expected in parts of South Karnataka

The weather department stated that between May 16 and May 21, heavy rainfall or thundershowers accompanied by gusts of 40 to 50 kmph are likely in selected districts of South Interior Karnataka.

Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Shivamogga, Mysuru and Chamarajanagar districts are expected to receive heavier rainfall activity.

Light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers are also likely at a few places across Ballari, Vijayanagar, Davangere, Chitradurga, Tumakuru, Mandya, Ramanagara, Bengaluru Rural, Bengaluru Urban, Chikkaballapura and Kolar districts.

Authorities are monitoring weather developments and may issue further updates if conditions change.

Bengaluru temperatures remain below normal

More than two weeks after the severe hailstorm that affected Bengaluru, temperatures in the city continue to remain below seasonal averages.

According to IMD data, the maximum temperature at the Bengaluru City observatory stood at 30.9 degrees Celsius at 5.30 pm on Friday, which was 2.4 degrees below normal levels.

However, the minimum temperature increased to 23.2 degrees Celsius, which was 1.2 degrees above normal.

At HAL Airport, the maximum temperature was also recorded at 30.9 degrees Celsius, around 2.3 degrees below normal, while the minimum temperature stood at 22 degrees Celsius.

Weather officials stated that temperatures are expected to remain within a similar range over the coming days.
