Bengaluru: Cinema lovers in the city now have a new reason to celebrate. PVR INOX has launched India’s first dine-in cinema at M5 ECity Mall in Electronic City, introducing a unique blend of film-watching and gourmet dining under one roof.

The concept, which aims to transform how audiences experience cinema, allows patrons to enjoy chef-curated meals served directly to their seats while watching a film — a first-of-its-kind offering in the Indian entertainment industry.

A new chapter in cinematic innovation

Speaking to The Hindu during the launch, Aamer Bijli, exhibitor and lead director of marketing and innovation at PVR INOX Limited, said the initiative is part of the company’s commitment to constantly evolve and enhance the movie-going experience.

“PVR has always been at the forefront of innovation. The idea behind this dine-in cinema is to create an atmosphere that caters to all kinds of audiences. In today’s world, we compete not just with other cinemas but also with OTT platforms and lifestyle activities. We wanted to combine dining and entertainment to make movie-watching more immersive,” Bijli said.

He added that the new facility was designed to appeal to consumers who see cinema as a complete social outing, not just a visual experience.

From Rex Theatre to luxury dining

This launch follows the success of PVR’s Director’s Cut, which opened in 2022 in Bengaluru on the site of the city’s iconic Rex Theatre, offering a boutique cinema experience. However, Bijli emphasised that the new dine-in concept goes a step further.

“While Director’s Cut focuses primarily on the luxury movie-watching experience, this new format is designed to give our guests a culinary journey alongside the movie. The food here isn’t your typical cinema fare. We’ve elevated our F&B offerings with gourmet dishes — from hand-cut fries to local treats and premium hot dogs — that you’ll find only at PVR INOX,” he explained.

Beyond films: a multifunctional venue

The venue, according to PVR INOX, isn’t just for movies. The hall’s design and layout make it suitable for live events such as gaming sessions, stand-up comedy shows, corporate evenings, and other performances.

“The hall combines premium interiors with LED lighting and comfortable seating, creating an ambience perfect for live entertainment as well,” said Bijli.

The cinema features a 70-seat capacity, designed to balance comfort and exclusivity. “We found 70 to be the optimal number. It ensures perfect sightlines and a premium viewing experience for every guest,” he added.

Dynamic pricing and luxury experience

The pricing follows a dynamic model, depending on the type of event and content. Currently, a two-seater table is priced at ₹490, while a four-seater table costs ₹990.

Every seat comes with dedicated service, allowing guests to order from a curated menu without leaving their seats. The focus, PVR INOX said, is on creating a relaxed, restaurant-style environment that complements the viewing experience.

Reinventing the theatre experience

PVR INOX, which already operates India’s largest multiplex network, sees this concept as a way to reimagine cinemas as lifestyle destinations rather than mere entertainment venues.

“Audiences today seek experiences. They want to socialise, relax, and be entertained in one space. Our dine-in cinema combines the comfort of a luxury restaurant with the thrill of a movie theatre,” Bijli said.

Industry analysts believe the concept could mark a new direction for multiplex chains seeking to attract footfall amid the rising popularity of OTT platforms and other leisure activities.

With Bengaluru’s cosmopolitan audience known for embracing innovative lifestyle trends, PVR INOX’s latest venture appears poised to redefine how the city — and perhaps India — experiences cinema.
