Strokes, once considered a risk for older adults, are increasingly affecting young people in Bengaluru. Hospitals report a significant rise in young stroke cases, which were almost unheard of just a few years ago. Dr. Raghuram G of Fortis Hospital noted that they now see two young stroke cases each week, attributing the trend to lifestyle factors such as poor diet, stress, and lack of sleep. Post-Covid changes, including increased blood-clotting tendencies, have also contributed to this alarming pattern.
Dr. Santhosh NS from Manipal Hospitals explained that ‘young-onset stroke’ now represents 10-15% of all cases, with arterial dissection—a tear in neck blood vessels often caused by routine movements like head-turning—becoming a common cause. Dr. Amit Kulkarni from Sakra World Hospital emphasized that early-onset hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol in younger adults stem from sedentary lifestyles, heightening stroke risk. Shockingly, one in four stroke patients at Sakra World comes from younger age groups.
