Bengaluru: A massive jewellery theft worth nearly Rs 18 crore has been reported from a residential property in Bengaluru, sending shockwaves across the city and raising serious concerns about domestic staff verification and household security. The burglary allegedly took place while the family was away for a few hours, during which multiple lockers inside the house were forcibly opened and large quantities of gold, silver and cash were stolen.
The victim, identified as Shimanth S Arjun, a 28-year-old businessman, resides with his family in the city. According to the police, the incident occurred on January 25, when most members of the household had stepped out to attend a family ceremony.
Family away when theft allegedly occurred
Police said that at around 9:00 am, Shimanth, his mother Malini, and his wife Tanmayi left the house to attend a ceremony at a relative’s residence. Shimanth’s father was not at home either, as he had travelled to another town for work. Only domestic staff were present in the house at the time.
Around 12:38 pm, the family received a call from their cook, Ambika, who informed them that cupboards in the house had been broken open and that some staff members had fled. Alarmed by the call, the family rushed back home.
On reaching the residence, they discovered that the locker in a ground-floor bedroom had been forced open using an iron rod. Further inspection revealed that another locker on the first floor had also been broken into, with valuables missing from both locations.
Stolen valuables worth nearly Rs 18 crore
In his complaint to the police, Shimanth stated that approximately 10 kg of gold and diamond jewellery was stolen from the ground-floor locker alone. From the first-floor locker, the family reported the theft of around 1.5 kg of gold jewellery, nearly 5 kg of silver ornaments, and Rs 11.5 lakh in cash.
In total, the family estimated that about 11.5 kg of gold and diamond jewellery and 5 kg of silver jewellery were stolen during the heist. Based on current market valuations, the total value of the stolen items is estimated to be close to Rs 18 crore, making it one of the larger residential thefts reported in the city in recent times.
Domestic staff under suspicion
Police investigations have revealed that the family had employed multiple domestic workers. These included the cook Ambika, a staff member named Siddharam, and two housekeeping workers, Dinesh and Kamala.
According to police officials, Dinesh (32) and his wife Kamala (25) had joined the household only about 20 days ago. They were hired through a housekeeping agency, a detail that is now under scrutiny as part of the investigation.
The complainant alleged that the accused staff members closely observed the family’s daily routine and movements. Police believe the theft was carefully planned and executed when the house was empty, suggesting prior knowledge of the location of lockers and valuables.
Case registered, accused on the run
Following the complaint, the police registered a case against Dinesh, Kamala and other unidentified individuals for theft and house-breaking. Special teams have been formed to trace the accused, who are currently absconding.
Investigators are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas and questioning staff from the housekeeping agency that supplied the workers. Police are also analysing call records and possible escape routes used by the suspects after the crime.
A senior police officer said that efforts are underway to recover the stolen jewellery and cash, adding that such cases often involve attempts to quickly sell or melt down gold to avoid detection.
Growing concern over household security
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over security and background verification of domestic workers in urban households. Bengaluru, like many metropolitan cities, has seen a rise in crimes linked to insider access, where domestic staff allegedly exploit their familiarity with homes to commit thefts.
Police have advised residents to conduct thorough background checks, insist on proper identity verification, and install surveillance systems, especially in houses where valuable assets are stored.
Conclusion
As the investigation continues, the Rs 18 crore jewellery heist has left the affected family shaken and sparked wider conversations about trust, safety and accountability in private households. Police officials remain hopeful of tracing the accused and recovering the stolen valuables, while urging citizens to remain vigilant and proactive about home security.
