A unique fitness movement that began in Bengaluru is now gaining attention internationally with the launch of the Saree Run in the United States. The event combines cultural identity with fitness by encouraging women to participate in running activities while wearing sarees.

The movement was first started in 2016 in Bengaluru to create a more inclusive and welcoming space for women who often feel hesitant about joining mainstream fitness events. Over the years, the initiative has grown into a multi-city community movement with thousands of participants.

Fitness with a cultural touch

The upcoming event in Huntington Beach is being organised by Los Angeles-based organiser Aanal Patel, who hopes to promote culturally-inclusive fitness among South Asian communities in the U.S.

The event includes a 5K fun run and walk along with cultural programming and community activities. Organisers say the initiative aims to make fitness feel more approachable and relatable, especially for women who may feel disconnected from traditional fitness culture.

A growing movement beyond India

The Saree Run has become popular for blending tradition with wellness. Participants see it not only as a fitness activity but also as a celebration of identity, confidence and community bonding.

Organisers say interest is already emerging from cities like Austin and Chicago, raising hopes that the concept could expand further across the United States in the coming years.

The event also highlights how cultural traditions can be creatively integrated into modern wellness movement
