A 54-year-old school teacher was killed after she accidentally fell from a bike taxi while returning home in Bengaluru‘s JP Nagar area late on Sunday night.
The deceased has been identified as S Radha, a teacher affiliated with Delhi Public School (South) and a resident of Arakere. The incident occurred while she was travelling home after visiting friends and relatives in Nagarabhavi.
According to police, Radha had booked a bike taxi through Rapido and was travelling with a woman rider, commonly referred to as a captain on the platform. The accident took place at around 8 pm near Nandini Junction on 24th Main Road in JP Nagar.
Fall during ride proves fatal
Investigators said Radha was seated side-saddle on the two-wheeler, with both legs positioned on one side of the bike. As the vehicle approached the junction, she reportedly lost balance and fell onto the road.
The sudden fall also caused the woman rider to lose control and fall from the motorcycle.
Police said both individuals were wearing half-helmets at the time of the incident. However, Radha suffered severe injuries to her forehead and nose, leading to internal bleeding.
She was immediately shifted to a nearby private hospital for treatment, but doctors were unable to save her.
Police investigating circumstances
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the accident.
Preliminary findings suggest there was no collision with another vehicle and that the fatal injuries resulted from the fall itself. Police are examining all aspects of the case, including road conditions and riding circumstances.
The incident has once again raised concerns about passenger safety on two-wheeler taxi services, particularly when passengers travel side-saddle, a common practice among women riders in many parts of the country.
Safety concerns highlighted
Road safety experts have repeatedly stressed the importance of proper seating positions and protective gear while travelling on two-wheelers. The tragic loss of a teacher during a routine ride home serves as a reminder of the risks associated with road travel and the need for enhanced safety awareness.
