A scooterist in Bengaluru, who blatantly rode in the wrong direction and ignored requests to yield for oncoming traffic, was booked by the Halasur Gate traffic police after his reckless behavior was captured on video. The incident, which took place on April 4 on JC Road, went viral, amassing over a million views as online users criticized the rider for his flagrant disregard for traffic rules.
The scooterist, riding a yellow-coloured vehicle, was recorded by a car driver who had the right of way. Despite the footage and repeated requests from the car driver to move aside, the scooterist refused to comply. Further investigation revealed that the scooter’s insurance had not been renewed for the past six years, sparking even more outrage among netizens.
In a statement, a senior traffic police officer revealed that when confronted, the scooterist claimed he was rushing to visit a hospitalized relative. However, doubts were raised over his explanation, especially after he stated that he couldn’t turn around due to oncoming traffic. The scooterist was charged under BNS Section 281 for rash driving and obstructing traffic, with the case referred to court.
Public reactions have been mixed, with many questioning whether the fine would be sufficient to deter such behavior. Some netizens have called for more severe penalties, including the confiscation of the rider’s license.
