The second rake of the much-anticipated Vande Bharat sleeper train, manufactured by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), has arrived in the city after completing a trial run earlier this month. The prototype, expected to transform long-distance rail travel, is now scheduled for a series of corrections based on observations made by railway authorities.

Corrections recommended after trial

Officials from the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and the commissioner of railway safety had noted several issues during the recent speed trial. According to railway sources, these corrections are essential before the rake can undergo further testing and be approved for commercial operations.

An official from the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) told TOI that the adjustments would be carried out as per the directions of the Railway Board. “We made a speed run, some observations were made and after that came corrections. We will plan according to instructions of the railway board,” the ICF official said.

Second rake reaches Bengaluru

Sources within BEML confirmed that the second rake arrived in Bengaluru two days ago and is expected to be shifted to the assembly line shortly. Engineers and technicians will begin implementing the recommended modifications, ensuring that the train meets safety and performance standards before entering service.

This rake follows the first prototype that was unveiled more than a year ago, a moment widely seen as a major step toward introducing modern sleeper-class comfort on India’s premium trains.

Pending route finalisation and service launch

While the initial routes for the Vande Bharat sleeper services are yet to be finalised, officials expect the second rake to be fully ready by the end of the year. The railway ministry is likely to consider high-demand long-distance routes for the first phase, especially those requiring overnight travel.

Railway officials emphasised that once both rakes complete their correction cycles and required approvals, they will undergo extensive route trials before commercial roll-out.

More rakes in the pipeline

Apart from the initial two prototypes, BEML is working on eight more sleeper rakes. The manufacturing deadline for completing all 10 units has been set for March next year, ensuring sufficient stock to operate at least five Vande Bharat sleeper services.

The project is being closely monitored as it marks a significant upgrade in overnight travel, combining the speed and design of Vande Bharat trains with sleeper-class convenience. The new trains are expected to feature improved interiors, better suspension systems and enhanced passenger comfort.

Conclusion

With the second rake now in Bengaluru for refinement, the Vande Bharat sleeper project is moving steadily toward its expected deployment timeline. Once fully functional, the service is anticipated to redefine overnight train travel in India, offering faster, more comfortable and technologically advanced journeys across major routes.
