A Bengaluru court on Tuesday sentenced seven individuals to life imprisonment for the 2021 murder of former BJP corporator Rekha Kadiresh. The 72nd CCH court found Peter (46), Surya alias Suraj (20), Stephen (21), Purushotam (22), Ajay (21), Arunkumar (36), and Selvaraj alias Budan (36) guilty of the crime.
Rekha Kadiresh, a two-term BJP corporator from Chalavadipalya, was fatally attacked on June 24, 2021, near her home in Cottonpet. The police reported that she was stabbed 17 times while returning from a charitable food distribution event in the locality.
Kadiresh’s killing shocked the city, as she was known for her outreach to the underprivileged. Her death was attributed to a mix of personal enmity and political rivalry. This was the second tragedy to strike the family, as her husband, S Kadiresh, had been murdered in February 2018 outside a temple in the same area.
The brutal nature of the crime and its connection to local politics highlighted growing concerns over safety for public figures in Bengaluru. The conviction brings closure to a case that had caused widespread outrage and unease.
The case underscores the need for enhanced security measures for political representatives and efforts to address the underlying causes of such violence.
