Six tourists from Bengaluru sustained injuries after a hotel lift malfunctioned and plunged at a property in Srinagar.
The injured visitors, part of a larger travel group, were rushed to Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital for treatment.
Officials said all six are currently in stable condition.
Lift reportedly dropped suddenly
According to initial reports, the elevator was carrying the tourists when it stalled and abruptly dropped due to a suspected technical failure.
The victims suffered orthopaedic injuries and soft tissue trauma.
Hospital authorities said most injuries were related to limbs and that all patients were neurologically stable.
Inquiry ordered
Following the incident, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has initiated a formal inquiry into possible maintenance lapses and safety violations.
Police also visited the hotel to record statements from staff and survivors.
Investigators are examining whether the lift was overloaded or if a mechanical defect caused the mishap.
Tourism boom raises pressure
The accident comes as Kashmir witnesses a sharp rise in tourist arrivals.
Officials are reportedly reviewing whether some hotels and guesthouses have delayed mandatory safety checks while handling increased visitor volumes during peak season.
The inquiry may extend beyond one property to examine broader compliance across the hospitality sector.
Safety first for travellers
The incident has renewed calls for stricter elevator inspections, fire safety checks and regular audits in hotels welcoming tourists.
Industry experts say tourism growth must be matched with responsible infrastructure and visitor safety standards.
