Bengaluru: Despite repeated warnings and clear directives from the Karnataka Education Department, yet another disturbing case has emerged where schoolchildren were allegedly forced to clean toilets—this time in Yelahanka, Bengaluru.

The incident came to light on Monday after social activist Beltur Paramesh filed a formal complaint with the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) and the Education Department. He also submitted a video as evidence. In his complaint, Paramesh urged strict action against the teacher and headmistress involved, condemning the use of children for such tasks.

This isn’t an isolated incident. Over the past year, similar violations have been reported, leading to growing concern over the failure of schools to follow official guidelines. In response to previous cases, the Education Department had issued a stern order on March 26, 2025, warning that any such violation would result in criminal charges against the responsible school staff.

The School Education Commissioner had clearly stated that all government primary and high school heads would be held personally accountable. Disciplinary actions, including the filing of FIRs, were promised for any breach of these directives.

Notably, back in December 2023, the principal of Morarji Desai Residential School in Kolar’s Malur taluk was arrested after a video showed students cleaning a septic tank. Just a week later, a headmistress from another state-run school in Bengaluru was detained for a similar offence.

As the latest case awaits departmental response, public pressure is mounting for strict enforcement of child rights and accountability in government-run institutions.
