The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected the request for custody of the four-year-old child of a Bengaluru techie who tragically took his own life in December. The techie’s mother had applied for the child’s custody, stating that the child’s mother had concealed his location. However, the bench, comprising Justices Bela M Trivedi and N Kotiswar Singh, remarked that the grandmother is not known to the child and suggested that she could visit, but the custody issue must be settled through proper legal channels.
The 34-year-old software professional, originally from Uttar Pradesh, died by suicide, leaving behind a note accusing his wife and her family of mistreatment and blackmail. In response to the grandmother’s plea, the court ordered that the child be presented in court on January 20 for further review. It also stated that the case would not be influenced by media coverage.
The plea was filed by the deceased’s mother through a habeas corpus petition, requesting the child’s custody. Counsel for the deceased’s estranged wife informed the court that the child was attending a boarding school in Haryana, but they would bring him to Bengaluru. Meanwhile, the grandmother’s legal representative argued against sending a child under six to a boarding institution.
This matter arises amidst an ongoing police inquiry into the techie’s death, with charges filed against his wife and her relatives for allegedly contributing to his suicide. The Supreme Court will address the custody issue in its upcoming hearing.
