Bengaluru: A recent test of eight tattoo ink samples revealed traces of 22 heavy metals, including selenium, chromium, platinum, and arsenic, raising serious health concerns. State Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao highlighted the issue, calling for strict regulations and BIS standards for tattoo inks.

Tattoo Artists Weigh In

Bengaluru-based tattoo artists support regulation, with studio owner Akhil Anand stressing that ingredient transparency is key. Imported inks cost around ₹3,000-4,000 per 200 ml bottle, with traces of black carbon soot and iron oxide, which he claims are naturally present in the body.

Tattoo veteran Naveen advises sticking to black ink to minimize risks, as coloured inks contain higher metal content. He also stresses proper hygiene and technique over just ink quality.
