A tragic and senseless act claimed the life of a 29-year-old techie in Bengaluru after a drunk driver rammed his car into a bike over a petty argument.

The victim, HN Sanjay, lived in Vajarahalli on Kanakapura Main Road. His friend, 30-year-old Chetan Pujamath from JP Nagar 7th Phase, survived with minor injuries. The accused, Pratheek (31), a BCom graduate and manager at a private company, resides in RR Nagar.

On May 10, around 3:50 am, Sanjay and Chetan, who had been working late at Sanjay’s home, stepped out to get tea. As they sipped tea at a roadside stall, a car stopped beside them. Pratheek, reportedly inebriated and returning from a birthday party with his wife, asked them to buy him a cigarette.

When Chetan declined, Pratheek began arguing aggressively. Bystanders and his wife intervened, and she forced him back into the vehicle. However, as the techies were heading back home on their two-wheeler, Pratheek followed them.

He then deliberately rammed his car into the bike from behind. Chetan rolled over the car’s bonnet and escaped with minor injuries. Sanjay, however, fell with the bike and hit his head against a pharmacy shutter and pavement.

Sanjay was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday. The Subramanyapura police initially booked Pratheek for attempted murder, later upgrading it to a murder charge. He is currently in judicial custody. Authorities confirmed that his wife had no role in the incident.
