Rakesh Khedekar, a 36-year-old IT professional, attempted to end his life after allegedly killing his wife, Gouri Sambrekar, 32, in their Bengaluru home on March 26. On the run, he consumed phenyl and cockroach poison in his car at Shirwal, 51 km from Pune, late Thursday night. However, he survived and is currently being treated at Pune’s Sassoon General Hospital.

Bengaluru police have reached Pune and are awaiting his medical discharge to take him into custody. His father, Rajendra, revealed that Gouri was his niece and that their family had opposed the marriage due to frequent quarrels. Rakesh had called his father on Thursday, confessing to the crime and hinting at suicide.

Investigations reveal that Rakesh stuffed Gouri’s body into a suitcase before fleeing. He later purchased chemicals from Kagal before heading to Shirwal. A passing motorcyclist spotted him in distress and rushed him to the hospital. A constable at the hospital alerted the police, leading to his eventual detention.

Rakesh was shifted to a private hospital in Katraj before being moved to Sassoon Hospital on Friday morning. Doctors confirmed that his condition is stable, with mild symptoms like stomach irritation and acidity. Once discharged, he will be formally arrested by the Bengaluru police.
