Bengaluru: A 19-year-old Bengaluru resident has alleged that police demanded a bribe after helping recover his stolen iPhone, with his social media post triggering widespread discussion about accountability and public trust in law enforcement.
The youth, identified as Dhruv, shared his experience on X, claiming his iPhone went missing from a hostel workspace in Koramangala late at night. According to his post, he and a friend had briefly stepped onto the terrace around 11:30 pm before discovering that the phone had disappeared.
Phone traced and recovered
Dhruv said he immediately filed a complaint with the police and used Apple’s tracking features to help locate the device. The phone was eventually recovered, reportedly from an individual identified as an IIT alumnus.
However, what began as a routine theft complaint took an unexpected turn after the recovery. In his viral post, Dhruv alleged that police personnel asked him for money in return for recovering the device, describing the demand as a bribe.
Social media reacts
The allegation quickly gained traction on social media, with users expressing concern over the alleged conduct of the police. While some called for an impartial investigation into the claims, others urged people to wait for an official response before drawing conclusions.
As of now, Bengaluru Police have not publicly confirmed or responded to the allegations. The claims remain those of the complainant and have not been independently verified.
Calls for transparency
The incident has once again highlighted the importance of transparency and accountability in public service. Many social media users have urged the authorities to examine the allegations and take appropriate action if any wrongdoing is established.
The case continues to attract attention online, with many awaiting an official clarification from the police.
