Bengaluru: A shocking incident has emerged from the outskirts of Bengaluru, where a 19-year-old factory worker allegedly killed her newborn after delivering the baby inside a restroom at a Foxconn facility in Devanahalli. The accused, identified as Renuka, has been taken into custody, and a case has been registered as police continue their investigation.
Baby’s body found in factory restroom
The incident came to light on the night of April 21 at a unit operated by Foxconn, a major supplier and assembler for Apple iPhones. According to the police, a housekeeping staff member noticed a suspicious bag in a women’s restroom located on the second floor of the A41 building at around 9:15 pm.
The staff member, identified as Parvathamma, informed her supervisor Gayathri, who in turn escalated the matter to a technician. However, as the work shift had ended, the bag was not opened immediately and remained in the restroom overnight.
The following morning, April 22, the bag was opened by factory personnel, revealing the body of a newborn baby. The matter was immediately reported to security officials, who alerted the police.
Police trace accused through investigation
Police teams reached the factory premises, recovered the body, and launched an investigation. Preliminary enquiries led officials to identify Renuka, a 19-year-old employee at the facility, as the mother of the child.
During questioning, she allegedly admitted to delivering the baby in the restroom. Police stated that she later killed the newborn by slitting its throat and concealed the body in a bag, which was left in the washroom.
Authorities said the accused reportedly told investigators that the pregnancy was unplanned and that she was unmarried. Initial findings suggest that fear of social stigma may have played a role in the alleged act, though officials emphasised that the investigation is ongoing.
FIR registered, further probe underway
Based on the complaint filed by a senior security official at the factory, a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered under Sections 93 and 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police are continuing to gather evidence and verify all aspects of the case.
Officials are also examining CCTV footage from the premises, as well as statements from employees and supervisors, to establish a clear timeline of events and determine whether anyone else had prior knowledge of the incident.
Questions over workplace monitoring
The incident has raised concerns regarding monitoring and safety protocols within large industrial facilities employing thousands of workers. Questions are being asked about whether warning signs were missed and if timely intervention could have prevented the tragedy.
The delay in inspecting the suspicious bag has also come under scrutiny, as it remained unattended overnight before being opened the next day.
Broader social concerns highlighted
The case has once again drawn attention to the social pressures and stigma surrounding unplanned pregnancies, particularly among young and unmarried women. Experts often point out that lack of awareness, support systems, and access to counselling can lead to extreme decisions in moments of distress.
While the legal process will determine the course of action against the accused, the incident underscores the need for better mental health support, reproductive health awareness, and workplace welfare mechanisms.
Conclusion
As the investigation progresses, authorities are expected to examine all contributing factors, including workplace conditions and personal circumstances. The case has sent shockwaves across the region, highlighting both a serious criminal offence and underlying social issues that require attention. Police have stated that further details will be shared as the probe advances.
