At least ten people reportedly drowned after entering a river to collect mussel shells in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district on Sunday, officials said.
According to preliminary information, a group of 14 people had entered the Venkatapura river near Bhatkal when several of them were swept away by strong currents.
Rescue operation launched
Police said some people were rescued from the river and shifted to the Government Hospital in Bhatkal for treatment.
Search and rescue operations are still underway to trace those reported missing.
The victims are believed to be residents of Saradahole in Shirali village, officials added.
Police and locals join rescue efforts
Personnel from the Bhatkal Rural Police Station rushed to the spot immediately after receiving information about the incident.
Rescue teams, along with local authorities and residents, have been carrying out search operations in the river area.
Officials are yet to release the identities of all the victims.
