Bengaluru: A late-night drive turned tragic near Hoskote on the outskirts of Bengaluru after a Mercedes-Benz SUV allegedly crashed into a road divider on the Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR), killing a 30-year-old used-car dealer and his 23-year-old friend. The accident occurred shortly after midnight on Saturday near Doddahullur, close to the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway.
Duo were returning from dinner
According to police, the deceased have been identified as Rizwan, a used-car dealer, and Saajiya, a part-time employee at a private firm.
Investigators said Rizwan had picked up Saajiya from Kammanahalli and driven towards Devanahalli for a late-night dinner. The pair were returning to Bengaluru when the accident took place on the STRR near Hoskote.
Police stated that the Mercedes-Benz SUV was allegedly owned by one of Rizwan’s clients and had been handed over to him for resale.
High-speed crash leaves SUV mangled
Preliminary investigations suggest that speeding and reckless driving may have contributed to the accident.
Police believe Rizwan lost control of the luxury SUV before it crashed into a road divider with tremendous force. The impact severely damaged the front portion of the vehicle.
Saajiya suffered critical injuries and was declared dead at the scene.
The violent collision also raised initial confusion among investigators, as Rizwan could not be found inside or around the vehicle immediately after the crash.
Driver found in water body below bridge
Following a search of the accident site, authorities discovered that Rizwan had been thrown out of the SUV due to the force of the impact.
Police said he fell into a water-filled area beneath a nearby bridge.
Rescue teams launched a search operation during the night but were unable to recover him immediately because of poor visibility and darkness.
His body was eventually recovered on Saturday morning with the assistance of fire and emergency services personnel.
Investigation faces challenges
Police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation into the accident.
Officials said one of the challenges facing investigators is the absence of usable CCTV footage from the area. Cameras installed along the STRR were reportedly not functioning at the time of the crash, making it difficult to establish the exact sequence of events.
Authorities are now relying on physical evidence from the scene, vehicle examination reports and witness statements to reconstruct what happened.
Road safety concerns on high-speed corridors
The accident has once again highlighted concerns about speeding on newly developed high-speed road corridors around Bengaluru.
The Satellite Town Ring Road and the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway region witness significant vehicular movement, particularly during late-night and early-morning hours. Traffic experts have repeatedly warned that excessive speed can significantly reduce reaction time and increase the severity of accidents.
Police continue to urge motorists to follow speed limits and exercise caution, especially while driving on expressways and ring roads.
Investigation continues
Authorities said further details will emerge after forensic examination of the vehicle and completion of the investigation.
Police are expected to determine whether speeding, driver error or any other factors played a role in the fatal crash.
The deaths of Rizwan and Saajiya have left their families and friends in mourning, while the incident serves as another reminder of the risks associated with high-speed driving.
Conclusion
The fatal crash near Hoskote claimed the lives of a young woman and a car dealer who were returning to Bengaluru after dinner. As investigators work to determine the exact cause of the accident, the tragedy has once again brought attention to road safety concerns on high-speed highways around the city.
