A late-night cab ride in Bengaluru turned into a shocking ordeal for a private company employee who was allegedly robbed by an Uber driver after falling asleep during the journey.

According to police, the passenger lost his iPhone and gold chain after the driver reportedly took advantage of the situation and abandoned him on the roadside before fleeing.

Passenger robbed during late-night ride

The incident reportedly took place on the outskirts of Bengaluru, and the victim has filed a complaint at the Avalahalli Police Station.

As per the complaint, the man had attended a party with five friends at a dhaba near Budigere. After the gathering, he booked an Uber cab to return home.

The driver picked him up and reportedly collected some advance payment for the trip. Tired after the party, the passenger fell asleep shortly after the ride began.

Police said the driver allegedly stopped the cab near Orion Uptown in Katanallur, woke the passenger and told him that his destination had arrived. The man got down from the car, after which the driver quickly drove away.

Theft discovered after cab leaves

Only after the vehicle had left did the passenger realise that his mobile phone and gold chain were missing.

Unable to contact anyone, the man was eventually helped by a passerby who assisted him in getting home safely.

The next day, he approached Avalahalli police and lodged a formal complaint regarding the robbery.

Driver allegedly tried to avoid suspicion

Preliminary investigation revealed that the driver may have attempted to avoid suspicion by cleverly completing the trip in the app.

Police sources said the driver first dropped the passenger midway at Katanallur, then continued driving to the actual destination mentioned in the ride booking before officially ending the trip on the Uber app.

Authorities believe this was done to prevent the ride from appearing incomplete in Uber’s tracking system.

After the incident, the driver reportedly switched off his mobile phone and went missing.

Police have confirmed that the suspect is from another state, and teams are currently analysing technical data and ride records to track him down.

Officials said further investigation is underway.
